Sophomore

Sophomore is a community staple coffee company in the heart of Baltimore. Their founder Kris Fulton is a veteran in the coffee space—Sophomore representing his second major shop opening (hence the name). His idea was to start small, work into sourcing and regional distribution, and eventually national distribution.

Challenge

Developing Sophomore’s brand involved design research into South American tapestry patterns. The idea was to create a design language that felt modern but contained a historical nod to the geographical region it sourced its product from.

Taking on all development of verbal and visual languages, we started by identifying pattern styles that would translate well into a modular letterform en route to creating Sophomore’s iconic S. This ensured the S could stand alone, as well as work into a variety of patterns & configurations.

As Sophomore has build out its sourcing & distribution plans, the design system has grown with them—easily lending itself to the ever-expanding lines of packaging and design artifacts they have produced throughout their growth as a company.
